BACKGROUND:

The world is Earth and on the surface it appears to be the same one we know. Sure, people end up missing, someone dies from a savage animal attack in the woods, someone's boyfriend leaves them to chase after a shallow vixen, but those things just tend to happen, right? Wrong. In this world, the creatures from fiction are a reality. Sirens were real, and their blood has passed down from the time of the ancient Greeks to today where women still lure men away from their spouses, jobs, entire lives if they wish. The only people a siren can't charm are other supernatural beings — a fact that leaves them huffy enough that they avoid all such people, or makes them all the more determined to bed one of them. Vampires arose from the dead to travel the globe and multiply through the sharing of their blood with their victim. They mainly survive on compelling humans to be their thralls (and convenient food source). Plenty of missing person cases are really vampires abducting these people. Werewolves prowl the forests and dark places under the light of the full moon, cursed to lose control once a month. They gather in packs, but it's more like being in a club than spending every waking moment together. Witches are connected to the earth, gaining magic to cast spells from the mundane to the profound. They tend to stay hidden behind their grimoires and try to stay out of the affairs of the other supernatural races, since they so often are bothered for a spell or three.

Their numbers are all so small that these species could never take over, and to reveal themselves to the public would lead to mass hysteria and literal witch hunts (and werewolf hunts, vampire hunts, siren hunts), so they keep their heads down and live their lives. All but the vampires can live side by side with humans, which leads to jealousy on the vampires' part. But when the sun burns you to death and you're immortal, it makes it difficult to just hang out in human society day after day, year after year. Plus the fact that witches and werewolves really hate the vampires because they feed on humans and make them their slaves. If those two groups had their way, there would be no vampires around at all. Sirens really don't care to meddle in those affairs. They're inherently selfish creatures who are only concerned with getting things out of others. While some supernaturals tend to congregate in cities for protection and the familiar, plenty of others are the only one in their town or rural community, and they often have relationships with humans. Unfortunately, the very nature of their beings makes relationships difficult, though there are some who reveal all to their partner. They are the very few humans who know of the world behind their world and the people in it.

Long before there was Christine, there was a man; an immortal man with a plan. Isaac was a vampire who hated being hidden away in the dark, surrounded by the unsavory humans who roamed in the dark too, often drunks or druggies. He longed to walk in the sunlight again as all vampires did. The craving of the light was part of their curse and he was determined to beat the craving by solving the little problem they had of burning to death in the sun. And that led to decades upon decades of research. The witches were knowledgeable and would surely have the answers. And they did, though they didn't give the answers willingly and Isaac had to leave some dead witches in his wake. But he finally knew what had to be done: a ritual that required a werewolf, a witch, a siren, and a human.

Enter the human: Christine. A tightly wound, career-oriented perfectionist, Christine was a nurse working in a hospital in New Orleans. Her life until this point had been uneventful. Sure, she was an overachiever and had won accolades from her time as a ballerina, but now she was focused on being the top nurse in her department too. An only child, Christine wasn't close to her mother since the death of her father, but she had a solid network of friends and an active social life when she wasn't working herself to the bone. Her roommate on the other hand, was a different story. Lindsey seemed to attract men to her with a smile and nothing more. She had a revolving door of suitors and was constantly inviting strangers over. And she never seemed to hold down a job for more than a few months, yet always had money to pay her share of the rent. Christine had a feeling Lindsey was getting her many suitors to pay for things and that maybe that meant her roommate was actually a (ahem) lady of the evening, but before she could sit Lindsey down to have a serious discussion about it, the unthinkable happened: two men Lindsey invited over one night suddenly grabbed both the women and dragged them out the door at gunpoint.

It was a terrifying experience, but it certainly didn't end up the way Christine expected. They were blindfolded, driven somewhere, and shoved onto a sort of stage, where Lindsey was chained up alongside a man and another woman. Christine was forced to the front of the stage and sat down in a chair. Then Isaac appeared. After a cheesy villain speech, he explained what was going on: about the ritual and needing the blood of the other races put inside a gold metal ball that the human had to hold. Christine thought he was insane. He had to be on drugs or something. What was he saying? Witches, vampires, and the rest were real? Of course not. Science was real; supernatural beings with magic and curses weren't. But she soon learned the truth. Blood was drawn from the people behind her and put inside the gold ball. It was sealed shut and placed in Christine's hands and then Isaac began to read in Latin from a book. The ball began to heat up, but before Christine could drop it, it seemingly latched onto her hands and started to burn her. By the time she started screaming, the doors to the ritual chamber burst open and a host of people entered to rescue them. The vampires were shot at with crossbow bolts and Isaac was forced to retreat with his ritual book without completing the ritual. But by not completing it, the spell he was casting backfired, and the ball that was supposed to absorb Christine's life essence in order to allow vampires to walk in the sun instead pushed its magic into her, granting her with the power of sunlight. As their rescuers freed the prisoners, Christine managed to drop the ball and in a moment of panic, pure sunlight streamed from her fingertips, illuminating the room and immediately frying any vampire that hadn't yet escaped out the back. They were safe for now, but Christine's life had changed forever.

As they escaped, things were explained. Their rescuers were the captured werewolf Caleb's pack, and one of the tech savvy ones had tracked his cell phone here after his kidnapping. Lindsey apologized profusely, admitting to being a siren and knowingly invited two vampires over because it would be a challenge to seduce them. She hadn't expected Christine to be home from work so early, and therefore not in any danger, not that she knew the vampires' true intentions. The witch, Emma, wanted to examine Christine and brought up the good point that the vampires would still want to complete the ritual, and once they returned to see ash littering the place in a windowless chamber, they would know that something had definitely gone wrong and was connected to the human who held the orb.

And so Christine was taken in by the werewolf pack, because what better ally to have against the vampires than someone who could kill them without breaking a sweat? But this was the last thing Christine wanted. She lived an ordinary life as an ordinary woman. She loved her job and wanted to excel in it, but these people were planning on hiding her away and using her to take on the vampires. Christine hadn't even believed in vampires an hour ago, and now she was the one who could destroy them all? She wanted to go back to her old life and her old routine, but when faced with an intimidating wolf pack and the knowledge that a vampire could threaten people at the hospital in order to get to her, she decided to play along. The vampires would take precautions to cover their skin before dealing with her again. They'd either try the ritual again or kill her so she wasn't a threat. In the end, Christine had no choice but to take the pack up on their offer to live under their protection as they figured out the next step.

PERSONALITY:
  • Dance, Dance, Dance: Christine's early life was dominated by dance classes and she always strove to excel in them. Her perfectionist nature was formed by being determined to not miss a step and she quickly rose to become one of the most talented dancers in her area. She loved the attention and was determined to become a professional ballerina, but then her focus changed after a personal tragedy.

  • A Nurse's Life: Her plans to become a dancer were halted after her father was diagnosed with a degenerative disease when she was a teenager. After witnessing the care the nurses provided her father with throughout his ordeal, Christine found she admired the work they were doing. In taking care of her father during his last few months, she decided to become a nurse to give everyone a dose of kindness. There was also a rift between Christine and her mother during this time. Her mother couldn't deal with what was happening to her husband, so Christine stepped up, forever resenting her mother's weakness. It was an easy role to step into. Her very nature was to be compassionate and caring, though sometimes it could go too far. Being a perfectionist, Christine always thinks she's right, and tends to smother people or act too controlling with wanting what's best for them.

  • A Secret World: After becoming a nurse, Christine got a roommate that turned out to be more than met the eye. Lindsey's escapades are what led to the ritual that would changed Christine's life forever. It was one thing to have a thoughtless, airheaded roommate; it was quite another to have said roommate put their lives in danger just in order to get laid. After being kidnapped, Christine went from terrified to absolutely stunned to discover than vampires, werewolves, witches, and sirens were all real things. Magic was real too. For the practical, scientifically minded nurse, this was a hard pill to swallow. Even after producing magical sunlight on accident, she didn't want to believe it. And once she finally did accept that all this was real, she wanted to reverse the magic given to her. It was frightening, unfamiliar, and unwanted. Christine thrived on logic and order. This upheaval into chaos was a true test.

  • On the Run: Her life turned upside down, Christine naturally freaked out, because she had had a plan and hated when things didn't go the way she expected. But now the remaining vampires were after her, wanting to study her newfound power to see if they could still complete the ritual or perhaps find some way to use her. A little posse formed between those involved in the ritual. Emma the witch began studying Christine and teaching her to control her power. Caleb the werewolf took on the role of bodyguard while trying to negotiate with his pack to allow Christine to hide among them from the vampires who saw her either as a threat, or the key to their ability to walk in sunlight. Lindsey the siren — feeling guilty she'd caused all this from her carelessness — vowed to reform and teach Christine all about the supernatural world hidden in plain sight. It was the first time in a long time that Christine didn't have control over her own life and had to put her trust in others, and it was the hardest thing for someone who thrives on being in control to do. Having to depend on these supernatural beings she didn't realize even existed proved to be a challenge, but she always rose to the occasion and was determined to do so again.

    POWERS/ABILITIES:
Christine can produce a burst of pure sunlight, complete with all the attributes the sun's rays possess. It's an intense, blinding light and also heat can emit from Christine's body. She can focus these to just release from the palms of her hands, and can turn down the intensity of the light and/or heat. The light is blinding to the eyes of everyone — human and supernatural — and it destroys vampires. Of course in game she can't go around burning vampires to a crisp, so I'm totally fine nerfing the intensity of this or providing an opt in/opt out page where players can pick what they want to happen to their character (as in, her power doesn't affect them at all, it gives a bad sunburn, etc.).

    INVENTORY:
  • a woven beaded bracelet with a witch's blessing on it, to allow her to receive aid from all witches. also has a wolf charm on it that Caleb made.
  • a tote bag containing: a notebook of notes on the supernatural world, her cell phone, a Kindle loaded with e-books, and a first aid kit

    MOONBLESSING: Iris
